About HVAC Exam Lab
A free study resource for the EPA Section 608 technician certification. Independent, not affiliated with EPA or any certifying organisation, and built on the exam blueprint that happens to be published federal regulation.
Why it exists
The Section 608 exam blueprint is not a trade secret. It is set out in 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F, Appendix D, and the topics are published by EPA. Anyone can write practice material against it. Most sites that do either charge for it, hide the methodology, or repeat numbers that are not actually in the regulation. This one is free, documents its method, and cites the source for every figure.
What is here
- 305 original practice questions across Core and Types I, II and III, each with an explanation and a reference into the published outline. A timed simulator mirrors the real format.
- A notebook that remembers what you got wrong and hands it back until you have it twice in a row. It stays in your browser.
- Six study guides on the material that costs marks, with the regulatory tables quoted from the CFR.
- A directory of all 87 EPA-approved certifying organisations, filterable, with the ones that test remotely flagged.
- Wage data for 383 metro areas from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, because what the job pays is the other half of the decision.
- 20 questions on A2L refrigerants and the AIM Act, kept deliberately separate because that material is real but is not on the 608 exam.
How the questions are written
Every question is original. None is a real exam item, a paraphrased leak, or a "dump", and using real items would breach exam security agreements as well as being useless preparation. Where we have been wrong
Study sites repeat each other, and some widely repeated 608 "facts" are not in the regulation. We have published corrections to our own pages rather than quietly editing them: the passing score page explains why the near-universal "72 percent" is not what Appendix D says, and records that an earlier version of that page overstated the rule. If you find something wrong here, we would rather know.
How it is funded
Nothing yet. There is no advertising on the site today, no paywall, no subscription, and no affiliate arrangement with any certifying organisation. The intention is to fund it with display advertising, at which point that will be stated here and in the privacy policy. The directory of certifying organisations is ordered alphabetically and no organisation has paid to appear in it or to be ranked in it.

HVAC Exam Lab is an independent study resource. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or any EPA-approved certifying organization. All practice questions are original and written against the exam blueprint published in federal regulation (40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F, Appendix D). Section 608 certification exams are administered only by EPA-approved certifying organizations.
Practice results estimate readiness against this question set. They do not predict or guarantee a result on the real exam, and we have no visibility into the actual exam.
